Even worse is that the authenticity ding when you have to blow your horn on a multi-billion-dollar high tech sector sector and sponge for handouts. (With three hundred bucks I don’t think we could have hired DJ-Hi-Tek and dude lives with his Granny.) Direction ’s “no money” headline wasn’t solely for the chapters, but just about anything else you could think of to move the ball forward, as they often asserted, the institution was dead broke. Afterwards I found out they had nearly 4 million USD in reserves for a rainy day. Meanwhile, lots of the members have been suffering the rainy day without access to some legal revenue stream.
The chapter presidents used to get in on the annual board assembly to air and discuss concerns gleaned from the front lines. Solutions weren’since they were met with the older & ldquo t a significant agenda priority;we have rdquo & no money ; saw. I didn’t understand it at the time, but what they meant was “no money” for whatever else besides cocktail parties, salaries, bonuses, junkets, consulting contracts for board members and spouses of executive leadership, etc.. We don’t understand how deep since it is ldquo; not happening & rdquo; for the membership, anyone made to dip their snout in the trough or who. Section of the recently instituted inclusivity program is that one chapter president is made to speak for each of the chapter presidents and their associates. They’ve some Platinum Member company yes-man screen the masses for them at HQ.
As you unpack this narrative, rest assured it’s not all sour grapes since the chapter presidency plan wasn’t my idea. Most of those grousing about rsquo & the institution;s direction and demeanour was fulfilled with timers. I learned something: if the person or entity wants to recognize That There’s a problem that adage only works. In the event that you’re the one making your own chuck wagon gravy, a six-figure wages, bonuses, junkets, rather than having to produce anything concrete, it might be a little more difficult to comprehend the difficulties.
It all fulfilled with “the institution doesn’t even have the tools ” along with a resolute “certainly no discounted membership! ” Moreover, that travelled for people who bought stalls in the trade show too. I had suggested that They Ought to throw in a free year of membership together with the bundles. These thoughts would have helped to boost the membership numbers to my goal of 10K in time to nail the H.R. 658 shut. AMA was operating on mandating a million plus members crafting up the sec 336 stuff, but that is not the same article.
Putting points on the board —
I then talked with John Lademan, the new Chairman of this board, attempting to get some action. As far as he was concerned, he had no clue I inquired, “Just how much time do you have? ” as the AUVSI bootlicking campaign went FAA lapdog The shenanigans went . It reached this crescendo as the direction tried to acquire the FAA along with business folks to marginalize me for speaking from the internal dysfunction. Oh, was throwing away an opportunity. For what? To be a part of the issue? Readers that have followed me understand I don’t knuckle below for promises of gain or risks. Such ideas are usually met with me doubling or tripling back on my attempts.
I stated if we don’t even have money for advocacy and membership construction and the other attempts to further the industry, I would like to find the novels. Everyone insinuated I was indicating some impropriety and got saucer eyes. I said that as a businessperson is look at the novels to make sure we’re currently spending resources. The 300K spent about the advisers was an excellent illustration of business choices in my estimation.

effort uAvionix Adds 1090nano chip for ADS-B for Unmanned and Manned Aircraft Software
I blew a fuse on topics like hiring external consultants to research commercial applications for drones and if the institution should change its name. The name change thing was an fail, with a reduced number of folks being polled at the show. The board and executive leadership spent 300K on those areas while I reminded them that they were and that we had the very best and brightest from the sector. Why would we go outdoors to folks who know nothing about this technology? If a kickback was inside or any nepotism, lord only knows, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least. It was tedious and required an hour and a half to complete before you trot out the older they attempted an email questionnaire. What a disaster!
Readers should be aware that this wasn’t my Xmas with all the World’s biggest Unmanned Systems Advocacy class, as I was invited to be about the Airspace Advocacy Committee in 2009. I was ghosted by them 2011 right around the time that I started making a fuss about no commercial representation about the FAA UAS ARC that was recently formed. Efforts were focused on the ironnow the tiny plastic. But I think the pendulum might be on its way backagain.
The Notion of bringing on college technology departments, starting with the big engineering colleges and working our way down, was a Terrific Way to recruit a enthusiastic membership. I had envisioned a special department speed, as you’d be recruiting prospective high-earning associates as well as building the academic political foundation. Professor Bagofdonuts would have the ability to write to their own local congressperson on behalf of the students and the future tax base they could/would produce. The house office had issues for this thought. I also suggested they employ an LA PR company to work the picture, emulating something much more relatable to the public. The mainstream can understand the Florida Orange Juice grower’s message over the less agreeable Predator or Reaper rifling that the Taliban. #pickleswitch
“1090nano isn’t just the most recent addition to our growing product lineup,” noticed Paul Beard, uAvionix’s chief executive officer. “It represents another affordable safety-enhancing alternative, such as T-UAT in 2017 and the recently TSO-certified skyBeacon, which we’ve managed to develop thanks, in no small part, to the significant financial backing of two Big investors, Playground Global and Airbus Ventures,” Beard highlighted. “Their financing puts the foundational building blocks at our disposal to develop, deliver, and deploy low price, very low elevation, and high-density surveillance infrastructure for wide-area Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM). ”
AUVSI had complete control on what media outlets got press passes and also what sockets would report on the FAA’s progress or attempt to help teach people. Even rsquo & the FAA AUS -010 control didn;t even have the juice for the AUVSI series promoter to undo the decision on denying sUAS News a media pass. Incidentally, the News stories move out to more folks via email AUVSI used to have.
On a side note, they did employ the all-American Kyle Snyder child as the short-lived educational outreach person. As the story goes, somebody at the head office made an off-the-cuff remark that (paraphrasing), “One afternoon that I could see Kyle running this institution,” and it was full-on Mean Girls in the office before he was gone. #leadership
The FAA AUVSI UAS symposium-
At the time, I had no thought “the institution doesn’t even have the money” was a de facto mantra. I should have known something was wrong since the AUVSI didn’t cover their sUAS ARC representative, which was a fulltime bureaucratic fustercluck together with our prospective riding on it.
Fast forward to now, Brian Wynne remains reading off of this older Mike Toscano script, the business forecast is broadly recognized as bupkis, and also the membership numbers are down by 20 percent. Can the TOP Pilot Program be enough to put a lustre back ? Many find it doubtful; the webinar looks like school cafeteria staff helped put it together.
Outgoing chairman sternly stated, “not happening! ” Also, I got calls from my official AUVSI handler (poor bastard) telling me that I was asking dangerous questions and that I was making it private by phoning executive “leadership” (or lack thereof) to question. I t private; said it wasn & rsquo and I don ’t care who is getting paid what, including contracts and bonuses, if you’re putting points on the board. As far as I was concerned, there was a big fat goose egg (not the golden number ) on the plank, and that I asked Mike Toscano to enlighten me. To was that the 82 billion dollar AUVSI Industry Forecast. Another 50 Amp fuse began smoking; I wouldn’since I wouldn & rsquo t consider that forecast birdcage lining;t even need the bird to fall victim to some notions that were incorrect. I warned Mike the forecast would develop into an albatross that wrapped around rsquo & AUVSI;s neck. Political numbers are artificial BS another, something.
After public grousing, there was talk of cutting loose with $1000 in grants/loans for its chapters, and that I took this as the first step in a new leadership. One revenue-generating idea shared with me from direction was trading advertising space on the chapter site with +/- 20 visits a month. HQ has taken over the control of the websites since my tenure as chapter president. I heard there was a bit of a dust-up since the headline was chanted when it came to the updating the sites discussion at the Xponential this year. It looks like every last dollar is entering the Reputable Operator Program (TOP) program. (Where’s the beef!) After viewing the webinar video I’m thinking someone should preemptively call the NTSB and create an appointment for your impending rollout smouldering crater. I imagine the chapter picture thing remains a very low priority, as fear of individual thought runs deep at the home office.
I guess all of the ideas shared with direction about the best way best to build the membership, begin a grassroots advocacy campaign, and another suggestions to raise the business and association’s picture couldn’t be heard over the din of “Hey, Hey, ho, ho, killer drones’ve to go! ” at Code Pink hosting Die-ins at the annual tradeshow. Boy howdy, those were the days with each of the pageantry and drama a bunch of half-crazed loonies out of Berkeley could muster. Come to consider it, I think that it was on the natch because recreational weed wasn’t lawful.
Undaunted and unsupported (monetary or otherwise), I built up the encounters to an affair with tons of people in attendance and streamed it live on the Google Hangout at no cost. Non-members were invited to a preview or try before they bought meetings to see what this lively and tumultuous 40-year-old startup was about. The scene was open to association members considering commercial applications irrespective of their particular affiliations or impediments to attending levied by geographical places. Our Internet link attained well past VLOS and was viable and availed the chapter to likeminded folks from around the world. We did so because some people did not have a local chapter and because some of these chapters have a focus that does not appeal to the entire body of members, i.e., the Sea Farer or Pathfinder Chapters.
Following Gretchen West got fired, I decided to help out by tossing my hat into the ring for the recently vacated Executive Vice President position. The termination should have come out from the blue after they gave her husband a contract at precisely the exact same time since they chose to move to California. Boy howdy, that must have been embarrassing.
We began attending the tradeshows in and around the Valley and folks would say, “AUVSI, should be new since I never heard of you. ” Imagine what it was like answering that together with, “We signify the worlds biggest advocacy group for unmanned aircraft systems, and it has been in existence for 40 years. ” Shoulder shrugging and eyebrows that were raised would be the norm even after shelling out the money to have a desk and listing in the program.
At this time I had also given Executive leadership a few strong ideas about the best way best to increase the industry’s commercial picture, membership numbers, and also how to begin building a grassroots advocacy political machine that we would need in the future. I didn’t think we would get away from nation laws scot-free, and we would need local folks to help work the legislative division that is Federal.
Once I took over the Silicon Valley chapter, it was about 5 or 6 people hanging around voting on which sort of pizza we needed for another meeting. The perk on the deal was that we would meet at the flight ops construction at NASA Ames. Bittersweet, as there were glistening photographs of exotic aircraft plastered all from back in the day when NASA was about the cutting edge of aviation rather than the dull edge of a paperwork and bureaucratic nightmare. One week they’re telling me that I could hangar my plane there and the following I’m told, “Hit Muldoon, the bricks. ” I’m going to leave that one right there since the NASA narrative, the nodes, the paperwork, and also how to move from beguiled to getting yourself on the interplanetary Poo List is worthy of a separate retelling.
I want to thank everyone who has reached out to support my campaign for the presidential elections. That isn’t how the direction thing operates at AUVSI. It’s more of a thing also the leadership has bonuses, along with where & ldquo; chosen & rdquo; board members get consulting contracts.
UAvionix Corporation, developers of the world’s smallest, lightest and most affordable ADS-B transceivers and transponders, today announced the release of its 1090nano, a 1090MHz ADS-B single chip solution for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) ADS-B transceivers and find and prevent (DAA) software. In early 2017, uAvionix introduced its own T-UAT, a dime-sized 978MHz single chip which has been the cornerstone for each of uAvionix’s 978MHz ADS-B options, for both manned and unmanned alternatives, including the recently TSO certified skyBeacon. When paired with the T-UAT, the 1090nano will provide dual-band ADS-B receiver functionality at a dimension, weight, and power (SWaP) never before achieved.
The house office began to tighten the screws imposing limits on which was permissible, for example letting members join the chapter out of beyond my geographical area. The way it worked was chapters got $10 for every new member who combined. After that first infusion was cut off, there was still nothing made accessible for business growth or brand awareness from the Valley. Difficult to run together with the Silicon Valley VC large dogs on a budget of a few hundred bucks since Patagonia vests and New Balance shoes don’t grow on trees.
Including my tenure as Silicon Valley Chapter President (A Nostalgic Retrospective)
Whilst on that topic of independence, we should touch on what happened to the “international” chapters of Canada and Australia. While there were no resources for domestic chapters, the AUVSI lavished hundreds of thousands of dollars on building the Australian Chapter with strings. No such thing as a free spaghetti lunch! There were stipulations in the agreement that included needing to clean material and ideas which members would speak with their own government about (WTF). You will find more details and some shenanigans imported from the Canadian Chapter drop out, but the Australians told HQ to get stuffed, as the story goes.
Executive leadership didn’t/wouldn’t counter and instead stood by General Atomics and buried their heads in the sand for a paltry $11K a year. I led an attempt to disassociate or at least vote on disassociation with GA.. I figured we could have an open conversation and preemptively blunt public mistrust of drones, but the board and the leadership said. The best compromise they could come up with was a General Atomics’ sponsored pupil, but I said it would be a hard market to the peaceniks to state you’re going to educate kids with the money you made killing other people’s kids.
(Mantra definition: The term mantra can be divided up into two elements: “guy,” which means thoughts, and “tra,” which means transport or vehicle. I think that it might be time to reevaluate that the Chopra Center to get the chakras realigned along with the oil changed.)
Regime change did come, but it came to the Silicon Valley Chapter. The home office was trying to find a business naïve, malleable, yet financially capable of bankroll productions such as the NASA UTM symposium. Not that they had to shoulder the whole thing; NASA invested inside sending emails and substances out from .gov. Sure , that raised eyebrow or two about integrity together with Federal employees and promoting ventures for external entities, but NASA Ames got a boatload of favorable publicity, along with the SV Chapter cleared about the deal. To rsquo AUVSI & ;s charge, they do appear to be proficient in getting some taxpayer-funded marketing to be pushed by the Feds.
If this trend keeps up, the institution might well find itself unmanned too, irrespective of accounting methods used.
Back to the narrative —
Nothing like a good conservative, blood-spattered die-in or some dominant Fire Toscano sign supporting you when testifying to Congress to assuage your public image issue.
My bidding for Executive Vice President represented the last straw, as a certain CEO was chewing the rug he was mad. Here I thought that I was just attempting to help the membership (20% discount on the wages ), get a jump on regime shift. There were only a few people that would have the ability create a change and to take more, and we had a lot riding on this.
“Both T-UAT and 1090nano chipsets are capable of transmitting ADS-B messages at very low power, at a variety of 0.01-0.25W, which translates to roughly 1-10 miles,” Beard added. “Our plans for 1090nano comprise incorporation into current and future certified 1090MHz Mode C and S transponders, as well as low power detection and avoidance options for UAS. We released a Patent Pending concept we dubbed Inert and Alert In March of 2018 that offers low power, spectrum saving and safety options. The release of 1090nano further broadens this idea. ”
As far as the “elected” board positions go, they generally consisted of tickets with some folks working for diamond and platinum companies running uncontested, along with others which were a dogfight bin filled with qualified people not functioning for diamond or platinum fund companies. By what I have heard the process is a dismissal direction & rdquo; affair; along with ldquo; by appointment & rdquo.
Some folks thought it was time to break with the status quo and shake up things. It wasn’t all altruism as these folks had products they desired to market and no market to sell them in. Some reckoned the concept of creating the Egan guy a chapter president could be just enough to rattle the cage door open a crack. I suppose the word was out that I am a sucker for a lost cause, so I took up the challenge because we had an industry to build and we all knew it wasn’t going to take action by itself. My schedule was simple: small company, jobs, and STE(A)M, and included anyone who was considering a future with commercial UAS and the converging software of Land, Air, Sea and Space.

AUVSI couldn’t even muster the direction to dull this issue. I went outside to this beast’s belly and talked to protestors in DC, NYC, and Berkeley to explain to them how the administrative kill series theory worked. Most were under the misconception that these extrajudicial killing machines flew around and robotically set upon folks willy-nilly, indiscriminately whacking people heading to weddings and other non-nefarious household trips like birthday parties and Skeeball tourneys at Chuck E. Cheeses. No one understood that you had an HE “Hut Buster” Hellfire missile at the same end of this killing kill series and Barrack Hussein Obama . Incidentally, Berkeley is where I received my @thedronedealer twitter handle. The Berkeley Drone Town Hall meeting was a scene right from a movie, pot smoke wafting from the window and all. A guy comes in and says, “There he is guy, there’s the trader that is drone! ” I was like, “The trader is here, where? ” He intended me of course.
